Attension® Seminar 2021 - Practical Applications for Surface Tension and Contact Angle

Iria Torres Teran studied Pharmacy at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. She joined the Biopharmacy department of Sanofi Frankfurt in 2018 through a two years graduate program. Since January 2020 she is doing her Ph.D. in the same group, in collaboration with University Greifswald. Her research focuses on the development of biorelevant media for predicting drug absorption.  

Petri Ihalainen currently acts as Director of Innovation at MetGen Oy, with the responsibility of turning new ideas into new business concepts through R&D. He is also leading the public funding project management team with over 12 M€ Grant value. Petri holds a PhD in physical chemistry and has co-authored over 100 scientific papers and several patents applications.

Susanna Laurén works at Biolin Scientific, as a Global Product Manager for the Attension and KSV NIMA brands. She has a background in material science and did her Ph.D. on fabrication of microfluidic devices at Aalto University in Finland. 

Doctorate in Science (DSc) Riitta Partanen studied chemical technology in Helsinki University of Technology, where she defended her doctoral thesis on water and oxygen dynamics in food matrices in 2008. She worked at VTT on food structure for 15 years and joined Valio R&D in 2013. She is currently working as a research manager at Valio.

Joanna Kujawa has a Ph.D. in chemistry from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and DSc in material chemistry. Since 2015 she has been working at Department of Physical Chemistry and Physicochemistry of Polymers. She accomplished 2 postdocs and is involved in national and international projects with Jordan, France, Ukraine, Canada, UAE, and Italy. In her research, she focuses on material chemistry and membrane separation processes.

Tomasz Krystofiak finished his PhD. in 2002 and is author or co-author of more than 300 scientific publications in the range of gluing and finishing of wood and wood-based composites. To his research activities belong surface phenomena, wettability, adhesion and adherence, modification and gluability, and paintability of the lignocellulosic materials.

Katja Klinar is a young researcher working in the field of thermal control devices, alternative refrigeration, and heat pump technologies at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Her expertise is numerical optimization and experimental work related to a variety of thermal management problems. Her present scientific research activities involve the development of fluidic thermal switches for applications in systems with cyclical temperature changes, e.g., in caloric energy conversion technologies.

Dr. Ville Jokinen is a University Lecturer at Aalto University, School of Chemical Engineering. He obtained his M.Sc. in 2007 in Engineering Physics from Aalto University and his Ph.D. in 2011 from University of Helsinki, Faculty of Medicine. His main research interests are microfabrication, microfluidics, wetting, and superhydrophobicity and especially the applications of these in the biomedical field. 

Dr. Ankit D. Kanthe is an Analytical Scientist in the Sterile Drug Product Development group at Bristol Myers Squibb. He has been involved in formulation development and analytical characterization of drug products, including monoclonal antibodies, fusion proteins, and oral solids. His expertise lies in the field of interfacial science to understand protein-excipient interactions.

Ankit completed his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the City University of New York – City College, NY, and his undergraduate studies in chemical engineering from University Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, India.

Dr. Andrew White has over 10 years of experience with pendant and sessile drop methods gathered during a Ph.D. in engineering mechanics at Iowa State University, postdocs at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and University of California, Riverside, and as an application scientist at Nanoscience Instruments. He is currently a scientist at BASF Agricultural Solutions but the work he is talking about today has been done at the University of California, Riverside.

Eda Kaya is a Ph.D. student and a research assistant in Food Science Institute of Animal Science and Industry Department of Kansas State University. She is working on a project “sorghum grain, protein characterization and development of packaging film from sorghum Distiller's dried grains with solubles" funded by Seed Grant Program of Global Food Systems and supported by United States Department of Agriculture. She has academic and professional work experience since 2017.
