Biomaterials – man-made materials for regenerative medicine

Biomaterials are an important component in regenerative medicine. They are, broadly speaking, man-made materials intended for functional use in living biological tissue. The most familiar example is materials from which medical implants are fabricated, like dental implants, heart valves, stents, and other blood compatible materials. Other examples are artificial skin, hip joints and other components for orthopedic repair, materials in equipment for tissue engineering, syringes and catheters, and package materials for sensitive drugs.

Bengt Kasemo, Professor Emeritus of physics at the Physics Department, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. He was one of the co-founders of Q-Sense AB in 1996 and was on the Board of Directors of Q-Sense and Biolin Scientific AB for several years. Professor Kasemo's research projects focus on surface science, bio-interfaces, biomaterials, catalysis, nanotechnology, sensors and scientific instruments, nanotoxicology and nanosafety, as well as sustainable energy.
